Maquoketa boys, girls win Class 1A team titles at Iowa state bowling
WATERLOO -- The first day of the state bowling tournaments offered no shortage of drama on Monday.
But it ended well for Maquoketa, which took home team titles for both the boys and girls teams.
The first of the three-day event saw the best boys and girls teams crowned at Waterloo’s Cadillac Lanes, as well as the individual tournament on both sides in 3A at Maple Lanes.
In the 1A girls team competition, Louisa-Muscatine’s run of six straight team titles came to an end, where Maquoketa took three Baker games in a best-of-five format. Maquoketa went into the bracket tournament seeded third and took out the reigning champs in the semifinals and went on to beat six-seeded Clarinda in five games for the title.
The Maquoketa boys team claimed its title by entering the bracket tournament as the two-seed. The Cardinals needed five games to get by fourth-seeded Vinton-Shellsburg. The last game and decisive game went in Maquoketa’s favor, 214-162.
The 3A girls’ individual championship went to Vicki Andrews of Des Moines LIncoln while the boys’ title went to Cedar Falls’ Jackson Satterlee.
Andrews, a sophomore, bowled a 245 in her match against senior Jaquelyn Hochrein of Dubuque Senior. Hochrein entered the bracket tournament as the top seed after posting the top three-game score. Andrews was the No. 2 seed, but scored over 230 in all three rounds of the bracket tournament en route to claiming the individual crown.
The sophomore Satterlee went into the eight-person bracket tournament as the No. 6 seed, scoring a 682 in a preliminary three-game series.
Runner-up Kaiden Ringdahl of Davenport North carried the top three-game score into the head-to-head knockout round at 726, which included the day’s best individual game, a 279.
But Ringdahl was upset by fourth-seeded Jaxon Robinson of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the semifinals round. But the Kennedy senior proved no match for Satterlee, who claimed his title with a 226-195 victory in the championship round.
Kennedy’s Lucas Dolphin equaled the 279 by Ringdahl in the first round of the knockout tournament, but the second-seeded Dolphin went down to Satterlee’s 290 in the semifinals.
The Louisa-Muscatine girls’ quest for a seventh straight title looked promising after the Falcons went into the bracket tournament seeded second behind Camanche. However, Maquoketa got the better of L-M before Camanche claimed third place by winning the consolation game,
Louisa-Muscatine’s boys team posted a meet-best score of 3218 over the preliminary 15 Baker games. However, the Falcon boys’ squad was topped by the eventual champs. Louisa-Muscatine went down to Council Bluffs Saint Albert in five games in the third-place match.
